Migration & permanent residency

Many students who study abroad later pursue permanent residency (PR) or citizenship. The path typically goes from student visa to post-study work, then to skilled migration or employer sponsorship. We help you understand pathways in Australia, Canada, the UK, Germany, and other popular destinations.

The typical study-to-PR pathway

A degree alone does not guarantee PR—it gives you access to post-study work rights, which are the bridge to permanent residency. Policies and caps change; we keep you informed so you can plan ahead.

1

Student visa

Study a recognised course in your chosen country.

2

Post-study work

Graduate and work on a temporary graduate/work permit.

3

Skilled migration

Meet points, occupation, and experience requirements.

4

Permanent residency

Apply for PR and, in time, citizenship if you wish.

Pathways by destination

Requirements and visa subclasses vary by country. Below is a high-level overview—always check official sources and current rules. We help you match your profile to the right pathway.

Australia

Points-based skilled migration with occupations on the MLTSSL. Skilled Independent (189), State Nominated (190), and Regional (491) visas lead to PR. Skills assessment and relevant work experience are required.

  • 189 (Independent)
  • 190 (State nominated)
  • 491 (Regional → 191 PR)

Canada

Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee) and provincial programmes. Post-graduation work permit (1–3 years) bridges study to PR. Language (CLB) and work experience matter.

  • CEC / PNP
  • PGWP pathway

UK

Employer-sponsored Skilled Worker route leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Post-study Graduate Route allows you to work and find a sponsor. Salary and occupation must meet requirements.

  • Skilled Worker visa
  • Graduate Route
  • ILR after 5 years

Germany

Rule-based settlement for qualified workers and graduates. STEM and in-demand graduates can apply for PR without employer sponsorship after meeting residence and employment criteria.

  • Skilled worker settlement

What helps you succeed

Your choice of course and occupation, plus gaining skilled work experience after study, strongly influence your migration prospects—not the student visa alone.

  • Choosing a course and occupation that is in demand in your target country.
  • Gaining relevant skilled work experience after graduation (often 1–3 years).
  • Meeting language requirements (e.g. IELTS, PTE, CELPIP) and minimum scores.
  • Understanding points, state nomination, or employer sponsorship rules early.
